The best time of your life?
The move to Student life can be one of the most stressful periods in life. Problems need to be solved, decisions need to be made and money needs to be managed and these are just a few issues that may arise!
The combination of heavy workloads, money worries, and intense social life can be a bit strenuous at times with students experiencing their fair share of stress – as well as problems like anxiety and depression.
No matter how old you are, or the life experiences you have had, your time as a student is a turning point. It will be a time full of ups and downs – hopefully you will encounter more ups!
There is no one cause of stress – we are all different and react to different situations in many different ways. Student life offers challenges creating personal boundaries, making individual decisions and creating opportunities – all are issues which cannot be practised. The pressure from work, homesickness and the feeling of isolation are also common factors associated with stress.
Signs to look for are as follows:
Decision making becomes difficult
Sleeping becomes interrupted
Feeling frustrated, tense and irritable becomes normal
Loss of appetite
Life seems full
Increased alcohol intake
If you experience these symptoms please do not ignore them – they may only get worse. If you recognise them in a friend, talk to them and try to find out what’s wrong.
