Safe Sex

Sex can be great fun – but not if you’re not doing it right!

FACT: If you don’t protect yourself, you’re increasing the risk of sexually transmitted infections, diseases or pregnancy.

FACT: Only condoms provide 'all–in–one' protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections and diseases, including HIV.

FACT: Not all sexual infections have symptoms.  So you or your partner could have one and not realise it!  That’s why it’s better to practice safe sex instead of taking the risk.

There are many types of sexually transmitted infections, some of the more common ones are:

• Chlamydia
• Herpes
• Genital Warts
• Gonorrhoea

Most sexually transmitted infections can be quickly and easily treated if they’re discovered quite early on.  However, some can cause serious long term problems such as infertility in women if they’re left untreated.  Some warning signs to look out for are:

 Itchiness
 Rashes
 Pain
 An unusual discharge
 A burning sensation when you have sex or pass urine
 Urinating more than usual

If you have had unprotected sex and think that you may have caught an infection, it is extremely important to seek medical advice straight away!

For free, confidential treatment and advice, contact York Sexual Health Clinic – GUM (Genitor-urinary Medicine) on 01904 725417. Also watch out for free Chlamydia testing for 18-25’s in the Students Union.
