What a load of Rubbish!
When you move into a new area you are probably not aware of your collection day or what the law states in terms of refuse collection. This results in refuse bags being put out in the lanes from as early as the day after collection, leaving them open to interference, causing litter and pest problems, bringing down the general appearance of the areas and possibly resulting in fines for you.
How to deal with refuse during your Tenancy
Waste Collection
· Do you know your collection day? The law states it is an illegal offence to present your waste incorrectly. Offenders can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100. Don’t put refuse out any earlier than 7pm the night before collection and no later than 7am on the day of collection.
· If you live in a terraced area your collection will probably be weekly.
· If you have a wheeled bin it must be returned to your property no later than 7pm on the day of collection – ask your landlord.
· Some properties have a green waste collection which is alternated with your refuse bin i.e. your refuse will only be collected fortnightly.
· Areas collected by bags only include parts of the Groves, Clifton and South Bank. If you live in a property served by bags only all rubbish must be tied in a bag – loose rubbish and articles will not be taken.
· The collection days for different areas are as below:
Clifton Friday
Fishergate Monday
Heslington Monday
Groves Tuesday
Tang Hall Tuesday
· If you are unsure of your collection day or would like further information regarding bag collection or live in an area with bins, please ask your landlord or call the York Pride Action Line on 01904 551551
Recycling
· Some areas have a ‘kerbside’ recycling collection covering paper, cans, cardboard and bottles. To verify, call YCCC on 551551.
· There are lots of recycling bring sites around the city and three household waste recycling centres in York (Towthorpe
, Beckfield Lane and James Street) Call 551551 for opening times and locations of the bring recycling banks or look on www.york.gov.uk/waste
Street Problems
· Report street problems such as abandoned cars, drainage, graffiti, fly tipping, repair, lighting or any other street level problem through YCCC on 551551.
At the end of the tenancy
· If you have a lot of extra rubbish, furniture etc. to dispose of contact YCCC to arrange a ‘bulky’ collection at a small charge or take it to a household waste site.
· If you are leaving the property before waste collection day, contact your landlord to discuss assistance with rubbish removal.
PLEASE do NOT leave it in the street; you could be committing a fly tipping offence.
We thank those student residents who are already taking pride in their community and helping York to be a greener and cleaner place to live.
