Drink Spiking - Colin the Cactus
In the past Colin has been sighted in the Students Union with a gang of undercover students going around ‘spiking' people (placing pink drinking straws with green flyers in the end into people's drinks, with details on drink spiking and how best to avoid it).
We want to spread the word that you never can trust a spiker, so please be wary of Colin and Co misbehaving! If you do find a straw in your drink, please do not worry as they are completely harmless, they are simply there to show you how easy drink spiking can happen and to encourage you to be a little more alert and remember not all drink spiker's are a 7ft high cactus.
Well, take care everyone and if you would like to know any further information about the campaign or drink spiking in general, please do not hesitate to contact me 01904 629816 ( k.knowles@yorksj.ac.uk ) or pop into the office upstairs in the SU.
SSHH! Campaign – YorkSt JohnUniversity
The SSHH! Campaign was launched in 2003 by YSJSU to encourage students to be more considerate when going home. It has been very successful locally and has been adopted by other Unions nationally. Local residents have really noticed the difference. The campaign involves stickers, postcards and even
ts all designed to promote “Silent Students – Happy Homes!” It also involves special events like community barbeques and student pyjama events where members are asked by nominated students to SSHH! if they get too loud. The SSHH! Campaign is also supported by its “World” famous mascot Zippy from the TV show Rainbow, who appears at all SHHH! events as well as all the way through Fresher’s Week to promote the Campaign to new students.
It has proved to be so successful that more than 20 other universities and institutions in the UK and Ireland have also adopted the scheme. The York St John Students’ Union send out information to other Unions and institutions free of charge.
This year we are looking to breathe new life in to this more than worthwhile campaign. As YorkSt JohnUniversity is currently undergoing another new intake of students, they will all be encouraged to respect local residents using the SSHH! Campaign run by the Students’ Union. Local residents will also have a chance to meet some of the students at the Ward Committee Meeting held on campus later in the year.
Safety Of Students
Safety Of Students
Safety of Students is a campaign the S.U are continuing this September. It will cover a number of different areas which have been run successfully over the years, but will also include some new ideas.
This campaign will raise drink and drug awareness, sexual health issues, personal safety including; personal attacks, muggings, self confidence and civilian powers. Last but not least the housing issues, from licensing laws to crime prevention. The S.U has teamed up with the Home Office, local police and other organisations to promote and educate safety of students.
Freecycle 2010
What is YSJSU Freecycle?
This is a project run by the Student’s Union to help you get rid of any unwanted stuff before you move out at the end of term! We take it off your hands and recycle it to either other students, members of the community or charity shops! The whole idea being it diverts loads of rubbish from going to landfill and keeps it off the local streets.
How it works:
Step 1: You will receive a number of yellow bin liners through the post!
Step 2: Fill it with any unwanted items you have. (For items we are able to collect, see below).
Step 3: Leave it outside your house before 9am on either Wednesday 2nd June or Thursday 3rd June and we will collect it. Alternatively, you can drop it off at the Union from Monday 24th May until Friday 28th May between 8.30am and 4pm.
It’s as simple as that!
All of your things will then be sorted by volunteers and will then be part of the free shops we are going to run for both the community (over the Summer) and for students (in September)! Make sure you come along to see whether there is anything you’d like – it’s ALL completely free, there will be no entrance fees, just come and take as much as you’d like. Just remember one persons trash is another’s treasure!
Anything that is left over from the free shops will be given to Charity shops, refuges and homeless shelters in and around York. Dates of these free shops will be publicised nearer the time.
We will collect:
- Sealed non-perishable food within the use by date
- Stationery
- Cookware (pots pans, utensils etc)
- Crockery and cutlery
- Homeware (picture frames, ornaments, rugs etc)
- Bedding
- Clothes
- Non-damaged electrical goods that still work (lamps, printers etc) NOT COMPUTERS
- Toys
Furniture (providing that it has a fire safety label if it’s padded) If you need anymore information please email j.piddington@yorksj.ac.uk or telephone 01904 876360.
