New Year – New Start!

 
  It’s that time of year again when you begin to make your New Year’s resolutions to set you off to a healthy,  prosperous and successful year. Many of you will be thinking of giving up smoking so why not let the Students’ Union give you a helping hand?
 
 The Students’ Union has a fully registered Smoking Cessation service which is willing to help and support you while you go through the process of quitting the habit. We are able to fully assess which method would be most beneficial to you and are always there to help you along the way.

smokingFACT: Every year approximately 111,000 people die as a result of their smoking.

FACT: Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemical, many of which are harmful to the body such as Nicotine, Carbon Monoxide, and tar.

FACT: The greatest risk is becoming addicted to Nicotine at a young age, and having a life-long dependency on tobacco. 

FACT: Once started, there is an immediate risk of minor illness and a greater risk from serious and life threatening diseases later in life.

 

Top Tips on Quitting…

S tart with a firm plan for when you want to stop.

T hink about why you want to stop.

O nly stop smoking if it is something that YOU want to do.

P repare yourself for quitting with the following steps…

 

Step 1Set a date for stopping.  Write down that date.  Make a list of the reasons to remind yourself over the coming months.

Step 2
When and where do you really want a cigarette? Think about how you will cope in these situations like at the pub or at work.

Step 3
Tell everyone the date that you’re going to quit.  The more encouragement you get the better!

Step 4
If you need extra help, ask a pharmacist about nicotine replacement products.

Step 5
Think about how you will keep your mind off cigarettes – how about taking up a new hobby?

Step 6
Stock up on sugar free gum, raw veg or fruit and try some relaxation techniques.

Step 7
The day before you stop, make sure that there are no cigarettes around and throw away lighters and ashtrays.
